Sierra Blanca Book Share Project works in Lincoln County, New Mexico to encourage the love of reading and books in our youth and increase the overall literacy rate in our wonderful area of New Mexico. We have a few projects that we work on to get books into the hands of children and families in the area.
Lincoln County Imagination Library – We are the local affiliate for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program. We maintain the registration list and aquire funds to get books into the hands of children from birth up to age 5 for free each month. A years worth of books (12 months) for one child costs $25. We have already given over 16,000 books to Lincoln County children since 2017.
Books for Backpacks – Working in collaboration with the Food 4 Kids program for Lincoln County, we place free age appropriate books into the bags when possible. Books are donated or purchased from clearing houses to help reduce cost. Children and families sign up for food backpacks from all schools in Lincoln County. We have given over 5,000 books away in this program.
Lincoln County Book Exchanges – Our most recent project is starting and maintaining local exchanges (like little free libraries) in the community. We have one in Ruidoso (White Mountain Sports Complex), one in Ruidoso Downs (All American Park) and one in Hondo (Hondo Schools). We are looking to expand to more locations but we also work to help stock other exchanges in the area. We stock these with donated and purchased books.
More projects to come…. We would like to help teachers get books they want for the classroom or books for day cares as well. We also have donated books that are both young adult, mysteries, westerns and others that we would love to get into the hands of adults that would enjoy them.
Our organization is run by volunteers so the overewhelming majority of funds go directly to books for our community members.
Please consider donating to help give share the love of books and reading with our Lincoln County children and families.
